Do I believe that aliens exist? I’m of the opinion that life almost certainly exists somewhere else in the galaxy. We don’t know yet how life started on our planet, but we have some ideas, and it seems like it should be possible on planets that look like ours; in recent years, we’ve discovered a lot of planets in other solar systems that are ‘Earth-like’, and so when you put that together it seems pretty likely that we’re not the only life in the universe. As a character in the film Contact said, ‘But I guess I’d say if it is just us… seems like an awful waste of space.’
When people ask ‘do you believe in aliens’, though, they sometimes mean ‘do you believe that aliens have visited us here on Earth’? That seems much less likely. I can’t rule it out for certain, of course, but there’s so many problems with the reports of alien contact that you hear about that I think they’re probably not true alien encounters. So, I don’t believe in that type of alien, the one that keeps abducting the same people from the countryside to do weird experiments on instead of just landing somewhere and saying ‘hi’.
