Question: Do you think you'll be able to help people who have too much iron in their diets?

  1. I’m afraid that this question is a little outside of my area, so I’ll have to leave it for someone more qualified, like Vanessa!

  2. Dear Sammile; I like to suggest two things. First, it will be good to know what kind of food is high in iron content, thus avoid them. Iron-rich foods are such as liver, kidney, red meats, egg yolk, fish, kidney beans, dried nuts, and green vegetables specially spinch, etc. It takes a lot of good food out of diet, doesn’t it? Iron content in fish is not very high but it is easily absorbed.

Second, take food which inhibit the absorption of iron such as black tea, green tea, and coffee. The tannin is the chemial preventing iron-absorption. Grape(specially seed and skin) is also known high in tannin content.

  3. it would, but we get most of iron from eating animal based foods, such as red meat. So it would be a lot easier to cut down on eating meat, right!?

  4. Iron metabolism is outside my area of expertise, but the easiest way to reduce iron would probably be to reduce your intake of red meat, much as Soon and Natasha suggested. Some members of my family have a condition called haemochromatosis, which is a disease where the body can’t get rid of iron. To stop damage to their liver and other organs, they have to give blood on a regular basis, to decrease the amount of iron in their body (because red blood cells contain a protein called haemoglobin, which is mostly made up of iron, and is responsible for carrying oxygen around your body). Not only are they stopping themselves from getting sick, they’re helping people who need blood transfusions!

  5. Its very hard to consume too much iron in your diet unless you are taking a supplement (often without asking your doctor if you really need to be) or if you have a genetic condition called haemochromatosis. If you have haemochromatosis your body cannot get rid of iron, and it gradually builds up in your organs and tissues over time (years). This iron can cause irreversible damage to the tissue so obviously its something to avoid. Currently the best treatment for haemochromatosis is regular venesection (blood collection) – becuase this removes the red blood cells, which contain haemoglobin that is mainly made up of iron.
