Question: What is it about your profession that keeps you working so hard and loving what you do?

Keywords:

  1. Personally, it’s the high I get when I come up with something that no-one has every thought of before. Being the first (or nearly the first – science is full of discoveries made by people independently and at the same time) human to think of something is an incredible rush, and it keeps me coming back every time.

  2. For me its being able to help people using the knowledge I have. I especially like working in a small lab because I get to know my patients, and often get to see the results of my work and the results of the treatments the doctors prescribes (both the good and the not so good).

  3. mmmm, I don’t work super hard. I work mostly from 9am to about 5:30pm and don’t work on weekends. I think it’s not healthy to work too many hours and not have a social life! But I get all my work done in those hours, so it works for me!
I love the variety in my work, a bit of computer work, a bit of reading, a bit of hands on work in the lab, a bit of taking care of mice and weighing them every week, a bit of meetings to discuss results etc.

My job is very flexible and you’re quite free to set your own times. Plus most people I hang out with at work are all between 25-35 years old, so all still young and we all get along!

  4. I think the thing that helps me keep at my job is the fact that my work could potentially improve the lives of many people with muscle problems. Not only are we working on a way to help people stop losing muscle, we are learning about how the body breaks down its muscle in the first place, and this information could help other scientists to come up with even more treatments to help people with other diseases.

I like being able to work independently, and learn about something I am interested in, but the fact that it will actually help people is what gets me to uni on the days I’d much rather be in the sun at the beach šŸ˜€
