Question: Will science help me become a lawyer in any way?

Keywords: ,

  1. There are certainly some things that translate between being a scientist and being a lawyer. Both have to look closely at evidence, and cannot just make things up. You have to think about things critically, and methodically explore every part of a case or project.

There are some areas of law where a background in science might help. For example patent law or environmental law. I went through university with several people who did a double degree in law and science, which is offered by many universities. It just depends on the type of lawyer you want to be.

  2. Oh, yes. I am sure. Vanessa already answered your question very well. I will add that science background will enable you to deal with wider range of cases once you become a lawyer. I suppose it will make you look better than other applicants because of your science background.

  3. Vanessa answered really well, and I agree completely with here (and its funny you should ask this question – I’m trying to convince my husband to let me go back to university to do some more study and law is one thing I would like to do!). I think a background in science would be a big help in becoming a lawyer because a big part of being a scientist is critical thinking and being able to examine evidence and communicate effectively, just like law.

  4. eh, I don’t think so. If you know you want to become a lawyer, I’d focus on the non-science subjects. But, if you have an interest in science, doing science in high school will help with your general knowledge and development of you as a person!

On top of that, there are soooooo many people I know who are doing something completely different than what they studied for, so it’s best to be well prepared for whatever the future may bring! But then again, if you don’t enjoy science in high school and there is no need to pursue it, I would focus your energy on other subjects you do enjoy!
