Hi Chineseswan – I have found out more than I ever thought I’d know about the Earth’s core this week! Some things I thought were cool are:
– There is a solid inner core and a liquid outer core
– The outer core makes up approx 30.8% of the mass of the Earth
– The outer core has a temperature of 3700 degrees Celcius
– Motion of the outer core, combined with the rotation of the Earth is what helps to maintain the Earth’s magnetic field
– The inner core is composed of iron
– The inner core is approx 1.7% of the mass of the earth
– The inner core can be found at a depth between 5150-6370km
Pretty cool hey!
