I’ve always been really interested in space, especially when I was younger. I might not know lots about the detailed science, but I like learning about other planets and stars, and always wonder what else is out there. This is part of why the Curiosity mission interests me so much – they have a robot on Mars that can do all sorts of experiments and take lots of pictures so that we can learn more about our neighbouring planets. It’s an important mission because we will be finding out a lot more than we have from past rovers, including information on whether there was once life on Mars, or whether it could support life in the future. Plus, it’s a ROBOT! Some of the technology that they used to get the rover to Mars was also very cool: because the rover was so big, they had to use a “sky crane” to lower it safely to the surface.
I think the most important thing about this project is the scientists. NASA have done a great job of talking to people about what is going on with the mission, and actually showed the landing on the internet as it was happening, including footage of the control room. The scientists who work with Curiosity are very diverse, but all of them love what they do, which is very inspiring.
