Question: Is it possible for something to implode, if so how?

Keywords: ,

  1. An implosion is the opposite of an explosion, and happens when something bursts inwards, rather than outwards, condensing energy and pressure into a smaller space.

Sometimes this happens when the burst creates a vacuum, sucking everything into it, instead of the debris spreading outward. It can also happen when something is under a great amount of pressure, and collapses in on itself, like when gravity causes a star to collapse in on itself to form a black hole.

When a large building is being demolished using explosives, they actually want the building to implode, i.e. they want it to collapse in on itself, rather than spray bits of concrete all over the place.
