Question: Is there such thing as magic or sorcery?

Keywords: ,

  1. hard question and I’m guessing you’ll get very different answers.

    what do you think?

I believe that there are many things that scientists say do not exist, but I believe it’s only because they haven’t been able to prove it yet. That’s the thing I don’t like about scientists, they easily say things are not true only because they can’t prove it. I mean, they used to think the world was flat, until someone actually went out there and noticed the world is round!

personally, I do believe in heaven and hell, I believe in God and the devil, I believe in angels and demons. I believe that certain people can get ‘special’ powers either from God or the devil that we may see as magic or sorcery. I myself have been to church meetings where people with cancer got ‘healed’, where people who couldn’t walk, stood up and walked!

But then again, many people will think the opposite and call me crazy. Each to their own!

  2. I think it depends on how you define magic and sorcery. If you are thinking things out of the Harry Potter books, well sadly I’ve never need a real example of someone casting a spell that magically helps you find your lost TV remote, or clean you kitchen. If only, eh?

In the past, much science was called magic or sorcery, and many people got into trouble for doing science. This is because people did not understand how these things worked. It was new, and scary, and could only be caused by practicing witchcraft! Of course, now we know it was just good science, but it takes time for ideas to sink in and be accepted.

  3. I don’t think there is anything like the magic we see in Harry Potter (damn – I could use a good Accio or Expelliarmus spell sometimes!) but sometimes people can thing that things they don’t understand are “sorcery” . Don’t forget that scientists in the middle ages like Gallileo and Da Vinci were often thought of as sorcerers or magicians because people couldn’t understand what they were talking about or the ideas they were discussing seemed too unreal (haha…who would ever believe that the Earth was round and revolved around a giant star. Craziness!).

  4. If by magic, you mean something like ‘a way of interacting with the supernatural’, then I’d have to say no. It’s impossible to rule out the supernatural, but if magic – a natural way to interact withl the supernatural – existed, then we would be able to observe it, reproduce it, and test it. So far, no one has ever managed to show magic working when they’ve been challenged to do it out in the open. So, until someone shows any evidence of magic happening, I have to say no.

On the other hand, there are plenty of things that I might call ‘magical’ without meaning that they’re literally supernatural magic. When I understand a new piece of mathematics that helps answer questions about the world around us, it’s beautiful and magical to me. When I see someone do something that requires a huge amount of talent, like a fantastic musical performance or a record-breaking athletic performance, that feels magical to me. When I went to Japan and stood on the slopes of Mount Fuji and watched the sun glint off the slopes in front of me, that felt magical. There’s plenty of magic to be found in the natural world around us, without needing to invoke spirits or spells. šŸ™‚
