I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Disease Zone. It has scientists studying theĀ causes and processes ofĀ illness . Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
there’s 2 things you mention here, and that’s organic versus non-organic and plant based versus synthetic I presume.
Organic foods mean that they have not had any chemical or genetic interference. So they have not been sprayed by pesticides, they have not been given a fertiliser to grow faster (same for plants and animals) and they have not been genetically manipulated to make them stronger or grow faster than normal.
Studies have found that yes, organic foods are slightly better for you because they contain more nutrients. You can imagine if they give plants and animals chemicals to make them grow faster, they have less time to absorb good nutrients from the food they eat themselves, so once you eat the plant or animal, they will be a little less good nutrients in there. Also, pesticides may end up in your own body and cause damage and disease. But….organic products cost more, so many people chose not to buy them. Also, if you eat well and eat enough fruit and veges, you should get enough essential nutrients!
Now, if we’re talking about plant based products (natural) and synthetic based products (articificial), it probably depends on the type of product. But a good ones is vitamins. Studies have shown that there is a difference between a vitamin you get from eating a vegetable or the same vitamin made in a lab. In general, the natural vitamins turned out to be better and easier to absorb in your guts than the lab made chemicals.

Dear Sarahb; Organic foods are explained in Wikipedia as such; ‘foods that are produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Organic foods are not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or chemical food additives.’
However, I heard from a farmer friend that absolute organic cultivation is not possible. It only means less pesticide is used, more of human labor is put into. For example, another friend has a little garden. He raised pepper but found worms eating on the plants. He sprayed the fly-killer on the ground of garden, then the worms climbed to the surface, he caught them one by one with chopsticks. He never can take away the worms without using something(fly killer this time) to bring them up to the surface. It is an example of organic gardening or organic cultivation. It never can be 100 % free of chemicals, etc.
It is easy to accept that the pepper grown by above method will be a lot healthier than the one used to kill the worms by pesticide, etc.
